Sunrise of Old Town Alexandria (Sunrise) is in the heart of Historic Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, just outside of Washington, DC. This community is surrounded by restaurants, boutiques, theaters, antique shops, and other historical features of the city. Sunrise offers independent living, assisted living, respite, and memory care, allowing them to meet a diverse range of care needs. Sunrise offers its residents various outdoor opportunities, to include gardens, walking paths, porches, and parks (Founders Park and Waterfront Park). I also love that this community has programs dedicated to the interests of the community residents; keeping their bodies, minds, and spirits enriched with engagements and activities throughout the day. Sunrise also provides residents with trained professional staff 24 hours a day, who assist residents with activities of daily living, wellness checks, housekeeping, laundry, fitness, and much more. Sunrise rates start around $5,000 per month.
One of the great traits of Sunrise is its approach to keeping residents and their families connected, which was especially demonstrated during the rise of COVID, when they made it their mission to ensure families continued to stay in contact with their loved ones by supplying residents with iPads equipped with various communication applications. This simple yet invaluable gesture helped demonstrate Sunrise’s commitment to going beyond just the physical care of residents to also meet their equally important mental and emotional needs.

Brandywine Living at Alexandria (Brandywine) is one of my favorite assisted living communities in Alexandria because of its great location, committed staff, and beautiful, serene environment. Brandywine is a senior care community that specializes in assisted living and memory care services. This community provides studio, 1-bedroom, and companion suites, with a variety of suite features, including kitchenette, cable, wireless internet, and telephone.
This 6-story, 116-suite community offers their residents numerous on-site amenities, including a movie theater, pub, therapy pool, and a lovely dining hall outfitted with all-day, restaurant-style dining for residents and guests, and more. In addition, Brandywine provides 24/7 personal care, including assistance with activities of daily living, nursing staff, medication management, and mental wellness services. This stunning community quite successfully combines the charm of a residential neighborhood with the convenience of a retail district to provide residents with the best of both worlds. The rate at Brandywine averages around $6,000 per month.
One of the star qualities of the Brandywine community is their activities department. With their extensive activities program, they are able to regularly provide residents with 3-4 daily activities to help them stay active, engaged, and healthier. These frequent activities also foster social connections and a sense of community among the residents, which helps to enhance their quality of life.

The Silverado Alexandria Memory Care Community (Silverado Alexandria) is one of Northern Virginia's most significant memory care communities for seniors experiencing memory and/or cognitive impairment. This community is located right outside Old Town Alexandria, adjacent to King Street. Silverado Alexandria is not only a skilled assisted living community but also a specialized memory care provider. With an expert team of professionals, which include 24-hour licensed nurses, Silverado Alexandria offers residents access to constant care, as well as transportation and support with activities of daily living, some of which may include personal hygiene, grooming, feeding, and medication management, and nursing care. Silverado Alexandria provides three levels of dementia care they call “neighborhoods,” which consist of Nexus, for residents in the early stages of dementia; Enrichment, for residents in the middle stage of dementia; and Sensory, for residents in a later stage of dementia.
Residents of Silverado Alexandria can participate in community events, as well as enjoy the many amenities the community has to offer, such as tailored memory care activities, multi-purpose rooms, kitchenettes, and a beauty salon. Silverado Alexandria’s all-inclusive room and care rate generally average $10,000 per month.
One of my favorite features of this community is a program they administer called Eversound. Eversound is a wireless headphone system that allows seniors to hear their surroundings more clearly, which is ideal for movies, tours, presentations, and any other audio-related activities. This unique program undoubtedly helps hearing impaired seniors to fully enjoy the many hearing-focused engagements and events that Silverado Alexandria provides.
